Is spoken by over seven million Israelites and Jewish communities across the globe, Hebrew is named ‘the sacred language’ because it comprises the core of their holy scripture, the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible. Hebrew is an Afro Asiatic language and it is believed to have originated somewhere in northeastern Africa. It was the spoken language in Israel from the 10th Century BC until the Byzantine period from the 4th Century AD. It continued as a Jewish literary tradition up to the 19th Century, when it was revived as a spoken language.
